The Readiness Inversion

Kyndryl’s new report has a number that should stop meetings cold: only 32% of enterprises with broad AI deployment have hit even one of their stated AI objectives. Deployment jumped from 35% to 57% in a year. Workforce confidence dropped. More tools running. Fewer results landing.

The 9% getting real outcomes share a trait nobody wants to hear. They redesigned the roles before deploying the tools. Not after. Not “we’ll get to it.” Before.

Everyone else shipped the model and hoped humans would figure it out. They didn’t. Eighty-one percent of orgs expect AI agents making business decisions within twelve months. Twenty-five percent trust the systems enough to let them. That’s not a training gap. That’s a structural one — the role never changed shape to hold the new work.

Six months from now, the companies that redesigned first will have compounded daily reps into real judgment. The rest will still be planning a Q4 workshop. You can’t sprint your way out of a gap that widens every week.
