The Same Earnings Call

DISPATCH  ·  LOGGED WITH MAI

Cisco posted record revenue and used the same earnings call to announce two things: a personal AI agent for every one of its 90,000 employees by end of July, and roughly 4,000 job cuts starting July 13. Same quarter. Same logic.

The finance team already runs 80% of its draft work through AI. Not a pilot. Not a sandbox. Eighty percent of real output. The company looked at its operations, decided what agents should own versus what people should own, and resized the workforce to match.

Most orgs do it backwards. Buy the tools, announce the initiative, leave the workflows untouched. Nobody decides which tasks the agent handles. The result is expensive licenses and zero structural change.

Cisco did the uncomfortable part first. It redesigned the work. The agent rollout and the layoffs are not two separate announcements. They are two outputs of a single decision about how the company operates now.

The models Cisco is using are commercially available. Nothing proprietary. The gap is not technical. It is organizational willingness to look at the org chart and say: this is what we look like when agents are standard infrastructure. Most companies have not made that call. Every quarter they wait, the restructuring gets larger.
